Employment support for residents
Walsall Council’s Economic Wellbeing team supports its local residents to improve their economic prospects by helping them become more employable. We do this by helping to improve their skills and supporting them into sustainable employment.
The team takes a lead role and responsibility for tackling worklessness in the borough. We have developed, together with our partners, a shared and clear understanding of the issues that residents face in our locality. A Worklessness Assessment has been produced which provides a comprehensive overview of the barriers and issues that affect our jobless and unemployed residents.
Our key focus is developing activities that bring about reductions in the number of people out of work. We work closely with our key partners through the direction of the Worklessness Steering Group which is made up of our partner organisations; Jobcentre Plus, Skills Funding Agency, Training Providers, Contractors and the Voluntary sector. Our collective strategy is to ensure we gain the maximum benefit from mainstream funded provision and add value through increased levels of joint working. We also utilise flexible funding such as Working Neighbourhoods Fund to develop activity to meet gaps in mainstream funded provision. At the heart of our approach lies the Worklessness Target Action Plan which forms an agreed delivery plan. This plan sets out a programme of interventions to support Walsall’s workless clients back into employment and/or training opportunities.
A Guide into Employment has also been developed to help residents navigate the plethora of support and guidance available to them. The aim is ensure that information about what employment support is available and accessible in one place.
