Roy Johnson karting champion

A small display at Walsall Museum during March and April 2010 celebrates the achievements of Walsall’s Karting Champion, Roy Johnson.

Fourteen year old Roy, who comes from Pelsall and attends Great Wyrley School, is thought of as one of Britain’s most promising karting talents.  He began karting at the age of four years old and has been competing in karting competitions since 2004.  In 2008 Roy became the British Cadet Kart Champion, and his achievements have been compared to those of Lewis Hamilton at a similar age.

In 2009 he moved into the KF3 class.  Problems with the chassis and engine on his kart made this a difficult season, but these have been put right and Roy is looking forward to renewed success in 2010.

Roy eventually hopes to compete in Formula 1 or in Indie Car racing in the USA.  He and his family are currently seeking sponsorship to help him continue to develop his racing career.

The Roy Johnson display is on show in the Your Corner area of Walsall Museum’s The Changing Face of Walsall gallery from now until mid April 2010.

Your Corner is a dedicated area within Walsall Museum’s new permanent local history gallery, The Changing Face of Walsall, where groups and individuals in the local community can put on their own displays on a variety of subjects, from aspects of local heritage to their own collections.  If you have something you’d like to put on display within the Museum, please contact us on 01922 653116 or email museum@walsall.gov.uk.
