Families, children, health patients and students will be among the winners through the development of new public facilities in Pelsall.

Walsall’s planning committee has unanimously approved proposals to develop a new health centre, children’s centre and library under one roof on a site in Pelsall High Street.

The £4.5 million complex is a joint project between Walsall Borough Council, NHS Walsall and Walsall Children’s Services – Serco.

Work on the development on the site of the existing library and GP practice is due to begin next March with completion due by the Spring of 2012.

The new building will include accommodation for the GP practices currently providing services directly to Pelsall residents, a full range of children's services, a resident health visitor’s team, and clinical facilities for chiropody, physiotherapy, district nurse consultation rooms and a range of multi-use flexible clinical rooms.

Denise McLellan, Chief Executive of NGS Walsall, said:  “Through consultation, we have been aware of a need to extend the range of health services available to local people on their own doorstep.  Approval of the proposals is an exciting step in the right direction.  We will continue to engage with local people to make sure that the range of services the centre will provide meets local need.”

Councillor Anthony Harris cabinet member for leisure, culture and environment, said: "This new centre will make a real difference to people living in Pelsall and is a prime example of what can be achieved by working in partnership.”
