District centre shops rise to creative challenge

Shops in Bloxwich showed off their creative side in the first ever best dressed shop window competition organised by Bloxwich, Leamore and Blakenall Business Partnership with support from Walsall Council.
Sweet and Fancy - a combined sweet and fancy dress shop, based in Park Road, were declared the winners after wowing the judging panel with their displays made out of balloons including a fountain and carnival queen.
The judging panel was made up of among others the 2010 carnival queen Jessica Jones and her predecessor Sally Kirk.
Emma Harewood, chairman of Bloxwich, Leamore and Blakenall Business Partnership, said: "This competition was a great opportunity to raise the profile of the shops in Bloxwich and individually a chance for them to show off their creative side.
"The competition was a great success and we are hoping to run a similar event again soon."
The competition was run by the business partnership with support from Walsall Council's district centre management team.
Councillor Adrian Andrew, Walsall Council cabinet member for regeneration, said: "Our district centres are very important to us. We are continually working hard to encourage more people both from within and outside the area to come and see the wide variety of shops which are available, some of which are very specialist, in our district centres."
The partnership, which re-launched last October, meets every six weeks and discusses a wide variety of issues including crime, environmental issues, how money is spent in the area and initiatives aimed at boosting trade and raising its profile.
