A34 North Red Route
Project summary
Construction works to improve key sections of the A34, between Walsall and Staffordshire, began during March 2010 and are now largely complete.
The project is being led by Walsall Council in conjunction with construction partners Jackson Civil Engineering Group Ltd, Fitzgerald Contractors Ltd and G F Tomlinson Group Ltd. The project, costing approxately £3 million, will see the installation of red route signing and lining, the upgrading of four important junctions along and near the A34 plus a redesign of Bloxwich High Street.
The A34 is a major route into and out of Walsall which experiences significant traffic flows for a number of reasons. Primarily, the road is close to and runs parallel to the M6 with some sections being no more than 2km from M6 junction 10. In addition to this the A34 also links Walsall with other local centres within Walsall and Staffordshire. Finally the A34 actually runs through Bloxwich High Street, the centre of a busy district centre within the borough, approximately 4km north of Walsall town centre.
The overall aim of the roadworks is to reduce delays and congestion, improve safety for all road users, improve bus services and provide dedicated pedestrian and cycle facilities.
