A454 Wolverhampton Road Red Route
Introduction
Walsall Council is about to implement a Red Route and Bus Showcase scheme along the A454 Wolverhampton Road. The proposals have been developed and include identifying the local needs for the area.
Aim of the scheme
The Wolverhampton Road section of the A454 is a strategic route that connects the town centre to Junction 10 of the M6 motorway. It is heavily used by vehicles at all times of the day.
The main aims of the scheme are to:
- Control movements along the A454 Wolverhampton Road by using Red Route enforcement which will enable the traffic to move more freely and decrease journey time for all road users.
- Improve journey times for bus passengers using Route 529 and improve the general bus facilities to encourage greater bus passenger usage.
Proposals
The measures proposed as part of the Red Route scheme are:
- Replacing existing ‘yellow line’ waiting restrictions with new Red Route lining and signing along the route.
- Improving Lining/Road Markings along the Route.
- Changes to optimise the traffic signals to improve the traffic capacity of the junctions.
- The repositioning of existing pedestrian crossings at the Primley Avenue and Lane Avenue.
- Improvements to the Bentley Drive car park.
- Moving pedestrian crossing stop lines forward to improve visibility at junctions.
- Resurfacing most of the east bound carriageway into Walsall.
- Creation of 19 new ‘off-road’ parking spaces.
The measures proposed as part of the Bus Showcase scheme are:
- An Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) camera to be installed on the bus lane on Wolverhampton Road West approaching M6 Jn10.
- Infilling one bus lay-by and relocating the bus stop onto the carriageway.
- Upgrading one bus stop pole to a lit shelter with easy-access kerbing.
- Installing one new staggered puffin crossing.
The scheme proposals also comprise of junction improvements at:
- A454 Wolverhampton Road – Alumwell Road
- A454 Wolverhampton Road – Lane Avenue
- A454 Wolverhampton Road – Primley Avenue
- A454 Wolverhampton Road – Bloxwich Lane
