How to use these pages


These web pages are about signposting, which is about helping people to access local information and advice about their care and support needs giving them the information they need to make choices about their life and be in control of the support they receive. Information is available in a range of formats and channels to make it accessible to all groups. One of these channels is a website-based signposting system 'Help in the Community' that is accessible to both staff and service users. Information can be printed from the site for anyone who is unable to access it or provide them with information in a suitable format or language.

Help in the community

This is a signposting resource to enable citizens to self serve information. It is designed to enable people to access low level early intervention services to maintain and maximise independence.   

The site is also useful for staff  as it provides a range of information about the services available across the borough and can help staff to find a range of innovative options for providing support to people in the community.

You can use the links provided on the Help in the community pages to find a range of services, information and support across Walsall’s community on behalf of those we offer support to.

A to Z of council services

This provides an overview of council  services or can signpost you to other relevant sources of support. This can help you find a range of services which any member of Walsall’s community can access.  For example, finding things like how you can have an assisted bin collection service.

Directgov

A national government website that advises on a large range of issues, including benefits, tax advice, business advice, education, employment, health, travel.  Just click on the relevant section for a list of links and other helpful information.

Walsall Social Care Leaflets

A web-based link to all current public information leaflets, available to download and print off in a PDF format. Also links to audio versions of some leaflets and helpful videos.

Walsall Children, Young People and Parents Directory

This provides a range of information on local services for children and young people, parents and carers, and professionals working in this field.  Here you can access everything from sports and recreational clubs, to advice on bullying and educational services for children and young people, all of which is borough-wide. The site is searchable and provides access to a range of useful local information, for example, accessing information about support for parents, advice on employment and a range of leisure opportunities.

Libraries' Local Organisations Database

This facility uses a drop down menu of services, listed by name, to enable you to look for specific organisations. There is also a drop down menu which lists services by their type as well as a drop down menu which is location based, which will show you all the listed services within a defined location. This is useful for finding out what social clubs, groups and activities there are in a particular area, or find a list of places of worship.

Age UK

Formerly Age Concern and Help the Aged.  An organisation provides support and information to older people.  There are links to a range of factsheets as well as links to information on volunteering, housing advice and other helpful information.  Contact details of Age UK Walsall are also available.

All about equipment

Advice on the process of finding and purchasing equipment, what to look out for, where to get it, how to pay for it, how to get assessed.  Detailed maps that people can click on.  The different options around where to look for equipment, who can help you, how to get assessed, how to pay for it and other queries are answered simply and clearly with links to other helpful websites and organisations.

Care homes - ratings

This links to the Care Quality Commission web page.  This is the national organisation that inspects and rates all care homes, councils and other agencies that provide care to people.  You can look up a specific home or homes you are interested in or search for homes in a specific area to get a report and rating on their services.

Carers Centre

The local carers centre offers support groups, advice and information on being a carer, what benefits are available, other help with finances, housing advice, having a break, social opportunities and much more.  Services for young carers are also available.

Catch me before I fall

An easy to use web guide to leisure activities in Walsall with the opportunity to feedback on how user friendly the venues and services are.  Includes information swimming, fitness, martial arts, dancing and arts.  Specific accessibility section for each location explaining what extra equipment or help is available.

Citizens Advice Bureau

A national organisation with local branches that offers advice about finance, debt, employment, housing, consumer, family and personal, immigration and nationality, health matters.  Includes details on how to access advice in person at various local offices, by telephone and online.  Also includes a link to an online advice guide on people's rights - including benefits, housing and employment, and on debt, consumer and legal issues.

Counsel and Care

This is a charity helping mainly older people getting care services.  Provides a range of free fact sheets online and available to order in print.  Advice is available on home care and other options, community, help if you want to stay in your home, health care, benefits, mental health and carers support.

Disabled Living Foundation (DLF) - Living Made Easy

Part of the Disabled Living Foundation, the Living Made Easy website gives information and advice on equipment.  You can find out about different types of equipment and what would suit you in your current situation.  There are links on the site to various checked and accredited equipment providers.

Organisation which provides employment opportunities and support to people with disabilities.  Examples of different types of opportunities available and different services offered.

Midland Mencap - link on NHS Equip

Contact details for the local Mencap group for people with learning disabilities.  Mencap runs various support and social groups at different times of the day.

The National Careline

The National Careline is there to provide the information people need so that they can make educated decisions on a way forward  from their current situation.  The National Careline is a not for profit company offering information about care and support for older people, their carers and their families. It aims to fill the information and advice gap for older people and their relatives who are seeking to find their way through the care maze.

The National Careline also provides a wealth of extra information that users may find beneficial in their support and care of the older person. The service is free and users can access the service via the internet.

Ricability

National consumer research organisation providing information for older people and people with disabilities on equipment and consumer rights as well as advice on equipment for the switch over to digital TV.  Also includes consumer reviews of equipment and aids. Reports include: who can help: where to go for further advice and help, car measurement factsheets, guides to adaptations and motoring reports.  It is accredited by the Department of Health’s Information Standard.

Supporting People directory

This is currently a pdf document which contains information about housing related support for vulnerable people.  The advice and support focuses on keeping people independent so that they can remain in their home.  Types of services listed include support available from housing providers, voluntary agencies, handyman schemes.

Walsall Deaf People's Centre

Local voluntary organisation which supports Deaf people.  Information on their website includes advice, interpreter services, social activities, BSL courses.

Walsall Society for the Blind

Local voluntary organisation which supports Blind and visually impaired people.  Website includes details on registering blind, eye clincs, social groups, support groups, aids and adaptations and benefis.

Walsall Voluntary Action Database

This provides access to a searchable database of third sector organisations.  It can be searched quickly by using a key word, by using the advanced search facility to find organisations by area, services, age, language and client group, or you can browse the services by area. This is useful for accessing details of a range of third sector organisations across the borough.

Darlaston All Active - run at the former Garringtons Working Mens Club in Darlaston, hosts activities for all ages including karate, performing arts, dance groups, wrestling classes, live entertainment and tribute acts.  A private function room is available for hire.  The website includes details of classes, times, days and costs in the Activities section.  A cafe is also on site.

NHS Choices - GPs, Dentist, Opticians, Chemists

This is a web based resource that helps people find information about health, incuding lifestyle decisions about things like smoking, drinking and exercise, through to the practical aspects of finding and using NHS services in England. This is a useful tool to see what health related support is available; finding information about symptoms of different medical conditions, advice and how best to manage the condition. It also enables you to find the location of various medical facilities (GPs, dentists, opticians, chemists) which you can search for using a postcode.

NHS Equip - Health Support Groups and Information

This provides information sourced from a range of websites that have been checked for the quality of their information. The system has information in many different languages and there are approximately 4000 national and local support groups and services which can be viewed.  You can use a variety of different search options to source the information you require. This facility enables you to find a range of information about specific health conditions and support groups available locally.

Walsall Arts into Health

This website is about creative and unique ways of promoting health issues and campaigns to people in Walsall.  They focus on a range of health issues such as mental health, diabetes, sexual health, substance misuse, obesity and many others to encourage people to become involved and be able to influence health issues locally and also to help raise awareness of various health issues to help people make more informed choices.
