School visits to the Leather Museum

Girl practising stitching at leather Museum

Our topics and activities have been tailored to complement the National Curriculum, particularly history, but we also support art, design, geography, literacy, and science, too. Our work is not just topic-based however, and we seek to develop the skills of all visiting children, which also makes the museum relevant to the International Primary Curriculum. Our work is not confined to KS1 and 2 and we also support the Early Years stage, KS3 and the 14-19 Curriculum.

Tutor showing children how to make leather dog collorsOn our standard tour children will experience genuine, hands-on leatherworking activities in our authentic workshops. Our tour is free to Walsall schools (50p to outside schools) and other activities are offered at low rates which offer outstanding value for money. The standard of our work is also accredited: we hold the Sandford Award for museum education.

In conjunction with Walsall Community Transport we offer cheaper transport to the museum, and provide a schools` room, plentiful toilets, a child-friendly shop, garden, risk-assessed activities and expert staff who can offer years of experience, both of leathercraft and of working with children.

Booking a school visit

Please note that the museum is closed on Mondays and opens at 10am on other days. Teachers are very welcome to make preparatory visits to the Museum to discuss their plans and the range of activities available - please contact the assistant curator.

Examples of our curriculum-linked activities

children looking snake skin

Children with a giant snakeskin, which
was donated to the museum by
HM Customs after it had been confiscated.

The museum uses the skin to talk about
the conservation of endangered species.

Apart from such skins we have no other
leather in the building from rare or
endangered animals.

The museum shop

Please note that we can make up goody bags to an agreed value prior to a visit. This makes everything run smoother over lunchtimes and means that teachers don`t have to supervise batches of children in the museum shop.

If staff want children to use the shop themselves however that is fine: using the shop, after all, is great for developing a child`s numeracy.  We do have a fantastic range of affordable goods too.

Economical transport for schools

Leather StitchingWalsall Community Transport, a non profit-making organisation, is able to offer affordable transport to schools. A self-driven minibus (15 person capacity, 50 mile radius) is available for £38; a minibus with a driver (50 mile radius) costs £75; a fully-accessible minibus, self-driven, costs £53 and a 32 seater coach, with a driver, costs between £115 and £175.

Walsall Community Transport is keen to work with schools and may be contacted via 01922 685 555.
