Welcome to the new web page for Walsall Councils Green space Improvement Service (known as GIS)
The Green Space Improvement Service supports the community led regeneration of Walsall’s parks and green spaces, developing strategies and policies to support this process.
We are guided by Walsall Council Greenspace Services vision: which is to ‘involve as many people as possible in the management and maintenance of its parks and open spaces'.
This web page provides an overview of the work of GIS and how you can become involved in the development of improved parks and green spaces in your local area.
Who are we ?Walsall Council has been at the forefront of urban green space restoration projects in partnership with local communities since the mid 1990s
The Greenspace Improvement Service (previously known as the Local Involvement Programme) was formed in 1994 initially as a one year pilot project to demonstrate the benefits of involving local people in parks, green space and play area regeneration and improvements.
GIS has achieved considerable success and recognition since its establishment and its work sets the vision for the management, maintenance and development of Walsall’s parks and green spaces.
The GIS team presently consists of six members of staff including a Team Manager, three Greenspace Improvement Service Coordinators for different areas of the borough an allotments and community gardnes officer and a dedicated Project Manager for Walsall Arboretum. There are proposals to expand the remit of team to include an officer for the boroughs Allotments and the development of Community Gardens.
GIS has an impressive track record in securing external funding for a range of projects, from large scale parks regeneration proposals though to smaller scale projects many of which have been delivered by Friends Groups with support from the Greenspace Service.
What do we do and Where we do it?The work of the GIS team across Walsall is linked to Walsall Councils new Neighbourhood Management Areas (NMA’s) and each Greenspace Improvement Coordinator is responsible for green space projects in two of the six areas as shown in the table below.
