In 2004, the Government introduced new legislation which includes:

• The Housing Act 2004
• llicensing of Houses in Multiple Occupation (HMO)
• new property condition standard called the Housing Health and Safety Rating System
• new powers to bring empty homes back into use

The council’s Private Sector Housing Renewal Strategy 2005-2008 (PDF 4.2MB)  gives information on how we will deal with unfitness and disrepair.  The Strategy sets out what assistance is available and how it will be provided it also details our approach to all private housing including HMO, enforcement and area based housing initiatives. Our Housing Renewal Assistance Policy, sets out further details on how we will assist homeowners in repairing and improving their properties.
