What is asbestos?
Asbestos is a small fibrous material, widely used as an insulator in buildings and domestic goods. It has also been much used in building materials such as gutters, down spouts and roofing sheets.
Asbestos can be harmful if breathed in, although its effects may not be seen for years.
Thousands of tonnes of asbestos were used in buildings in the past and much of it is still safely in place.

Disposal of asbestos
Asbestos is a hazardous waste and its disposal is controlled. If you are a resident of Walsall and intend to dispose of cemented asbestos from your home you will need to obtain a permit from us. This will allow you to dispose of the asbestos at Fryers Road Civic Amenity Site, Bloxwich.
To obtain the permit you need to apply, in person, to the First Stop Shop based on the ground floor of the Civic Centre in Darwall Street, Walsall. Proof of residency in the borough, such as a bank statement or council tax bill will be required, as will the make model and registration number of the vehicle that will be used to transport the asbestos.
The asbestos will need to be placed in special asbestos bags (details below), which you should purchase when you apply for your permit.
The bags are available in two sizes:

The asbestos will need to be 'double-bagged' before arrival at the Civic Amenity site, to do this both red bags and clear bags are available. The asbestos must be placed inside a red bag and then inside a clear one. This makes it easy to check that the asbestos is correctly contained. The Civic amenity site will only accept correctly bagged material accompanied by a valid permit.
